Christina Kiberd

It is believed that Christina Kiberd was the first Irish-born Kiberd. She was born in 1836, probably in Monk Place, on the northside of Dublin City.

Christina married John West on the 9th September 1857 in St Mary's (CofI) in Donnybrook, Dublin. At some time between 1866 and 1868 the couple left Ireland to set up home in England. They had at least six children and three of those children were born in Ireland and three born in England. The first-born child that we know of died at the age of just one year and two months. The lack of mention of her mother, Christina Margaret West (nee Kiberd) is a bit strange.

1881 English Census Return for Christina West

The returns show that Christina was a 43 year old widow in 1881. Her profession was a tailoress and she had been born in Ireland. She was living at 70, Vincent Street, St Margaret and St John the Evangelist Westminster, St George Hanover Square, London, England. Her three sons, Henry W (aged 13), Thomas (aged 11) and George (aged 9) were living with her and they were descibed as 'scholars'. The three sons were born in Wandsworth, Surrey in England.
