Henry KiberdHenry Kiberd who was born in Whitechapel, London, is of paramount importance to the existence of the Irish Kiberd clan. All Kiberds in Ireland owe their existence to the fact that, for some unknown reason, Henry moved from Liverpool with his wife and children to Dublin some time around 1840. Every member of the Irish Kiberd family tree is a direct descendent of Henry. In 1834 a hatter named Henry Kiberd in Liverpool appears to have run into some financial difficulties while in partnership with a Henry George Thredder. An extract (below) of London Gazette suggests that a company called Thredder and Kiberd, based in Lord Street was declared insolvent. It may have been this event that inspired Henry to re-establish his business across the Irish Sea in Dublin. An advertisement (copy below) in the Dublin Morning Register states that a H. Kiberd, who had businesses in both Liverpool and Manchester, opened for business under the name of The Golden Eagle in Dame Street in November 1835. There is a Henry Kiberd recorded in the Pettigrew Oulton Dublin Alamanack for 1836 as living in 5 Whitworth Row on the northside of Dublin. In 1838 Henry recorded as living in nearby Monk Place where it is believed that the first Irish-born Kiberd came into existence - Christina Margaret Kiberd. Christina is recorded as living in Monk Place at the time of her baptism. At some stage Henry returned to England. The 1869 Thoms directory lists a Henry at 54 Grafton Street, and as his father (also Henry) died in 1864, it appears that Henry left Ireland in 1869, 1870 or 1871. He appears in the 1871 census of England and Wales along with his wife, Christina, and son Frederick (age 23) and "Kate" (age 16). It is likely that it is Henry's signature that is on the wedding record for his grand-daughter Emily Georgina West in August 1879 He also appears in the 1881 English census living with Kate, and her family, at 33 Wycliffe Road in Surrey. Henry is identified as the grandfather. Henry Kiberd died in November 1894 in Wandsworth, London. NOTE: Henry's father, also called Henry, came to Ireland at some point. His death is recorded in Dublin South in 1864 at the age of 84. As we do not know when he came to Dublin it is possible that some of the references (advertisements, directory entries, etc.) below actually refer to the elder Henry.

Is it possible that it was financial difficulties, perhaps insolvency, caused Henry to come to Ireland?

Presumably the register was compiled in 1834 so there was a Henry Kiberd (a grocer) living on Burlington Street in Liverpool in that year.

The first known address of any Kiberd in Ireland is No.5 Whitworth Row on the north side of Ireland. We know this as Henry Kiberd is recorded as living at this address in the Pettigrew & Oulton Almanack of 1836. This address does not exist anymore however in Thom's Almanac and Official Directory for the Year 1862 it is described as follows:
That suggests that Whitworth Row is now called Seville Place, close to Sherriff Street and leading on to the North Circular Road. |
